Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt) daughter
of an automobile mechanic-turned-transporter, is all set to marry the
NRI boy Angad (Siddharth Shukla) as wished by her Bauji (Ashutosh Rana).
She wants an expensive designer lehenga for her impending wedding. Her
reason is, “Dulhe me meri choice nahi hai…kam se kam lehenga to meri hi
choice ka hona chahiye.”
And that is her mission to Delhi –
getting a designer lehenga for herself. On her trousseau shopping trip
to Delhi she meets Humpty (Varun Dhawan) the large-hearted,
uncomplicated Delhi boy. As he is not the brightest bulb in his
classroom, to secure better grades, he thinks of blackmailing his
professor to pass him. The two youngsters meet in his teacher’s garden
and love happens. Just before it is time to part, they kiss and make
out.
Now Kavya isn’t a conservative girl, she
is a feisty girl from a Punjabi household in Ambala, Haryana. The
“Pataka tattoo”, gives you a proof of her temperament and her
personality. The heroine not only thinks nothing of going the whole hog
with her lover, she also guzzles beer faster than the boys.
Humpty decides to convince Kavya’s
parent’s that he’s the guy for their daughter. He has to win over the
stubborn Singh sir – and break this ‘tailor-made’ wedding with a
‘designer dulha’. Ashutosh Rana is Kavya’s fierce, conservative dad in
dire need of anger-management classes. Humpty’s plans of slyly winning
over her folks by not revealing his identity is thwarted right from the
beginning. The rest is how he manages to win over the odds in his
favour.
Alia Bhatt as the fiesty Punjabi Beer
guzzling girl, is a treat to watch and manages to add pizzazz into a
stereotype-addled character. Varun Dhawan effortlessly walks through the
movie, with an ease of a pro. Varun has put all heart into this role;
he doesn’t let Humpty fall even for a moment. The man from the US, Angad
Bedi (Siddharth Shukla) gives our non-descript and full-of-vices hero a
massive inferiority complex. But fails to be convincing at many parts.
He hasn’t got much of a scope to display his histrionics.
The movie has many a delightful moments
with spunky dialogues. Though the music is average it works its magic.
‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ is a smart adaptation of the widely-loved
film (DDLJ). You will like this sweet-dreamland from Dharma Productions.
